Kadayawan 2026 is here! 
Davao City has officially opened its biggest annual celebration, bringing the city to life with days of culture, music, color, food, and festivities. Rooted in the Mandaya word “madayaw,” meaning beautiful, valuable, or worthy of celebration, Kadayawan is a celebration of everything that makes Davao worth celebrating.
At its core, Kadayawan is a thanksgiving for the fertile land, abundant harvests, and natural gifts that continue to sustain the people of Davao. Its colorful floats, traditional attire, performances, and overflowing displays of local produce turn that gratitude into a celebration that the whole city can feel.
Kadayawan is also about its people. The festival honors Davao’s 11 ethnolinguistic tribes and the traditions they have carried across generations.

Kadayawan 2026 Has Officially Began
As Kadayawan 2026 officially opens, another chapter begins in a tradition that has brought generations of Dabawenyos together.
Every August, Davao City comes alive for Kadayawan, its biggest annual festival and one of the Philippines’ most anticipated cultural celebrations. For weeks, the city fills with color, culture, and celebration as communities honor what makes Davao unique.
The word Kadayawan traces its roots to the Mandaya word “madayaw,” meaning good, beautiful, valuable, excellent, or worthy of celebration. From this word comes the festival’s identity-honoring the land, culture, people, and blessings that make Davao truly madayaw.
The Festival That Helped The City Heal
Long before Kadayawan became the celebration recognized around the country today, Davao City observed a festival known as Apo Duwaling.
During the mid-1980s, after years of political uncertainty and social division brought by the Martial Law era, the city government introduced Unlad Proyekto Davao—a program that aimed to remind Dabawenyos of everything they still shared: an enduring hope and a future worth believing in.
The name Apo Duwaling was inspired by three of Davao’s most treasured symbols: Mount Apo, the country’s highest mountain; the durian, proudly known as the King of Fruits; and the rare waling-waling, often called the
Queen of Philippine Orchids.
We Are One, KadayaONE
The people are the soul of Kadayawan-and Davao’s 11 ethnolinguistic
tribes remain its strongest heartbeat.
Kadayawan is also a tribute to the communities that have preserved Davao’s identity for centuries: the Iranun, Sama, Bagobo-Klata, Bagobo-Tagabawa, Maguindanaon, Kagan, Matigsalug, Maranao, Ata, Tausug, and Ovu Manuvu.
The spirit of Kadayawan has endured because they have kept it alive for generations. They are, and will always be, the true madayaw.
