Some 508 Dabawenyos received free hearing aids from the Starkey Hearing Foundation on Tuesday at the Davao City Recreation Center.

Ralph dela Peña, whose 12-year-old son, Clynth Jazpher, is deaf and mute, expressed his gratitude to the foundation for giving his son a chance to hear for the first time.

“After 12 years, he can finally hear. Had it not been for the foundation, this would have been almost impossible,” he said.

The hearing aids, featuring advanced technologies, were given during the foundation’s second mission in Davao.

Their first mission was conducted in November last year, where they gave away 1,250 free hearing aids.

City Health Office Chief Josephine Villafuerte said this is a big help for those who cannot afford hearing aids.

“Not all can afford to have a hearing aid since it costs P40,000 per piece,” she said.

Villafuerte also said that the recipients underwent a series of sound hearing tests before being given the hearing aids. They will be also given after care education.

Tani Austin, Chief Executive Officer of Starkey Hearing Technologies, said they are targeting to give hearing aids to six other cities in the Philippines, including Cebu and Manila.

Starkey Hearing Foundation is a United States-based group that gives the gift of hearing to people in need in the U.S. and around the world.

The group said it believes that hearing is a vehicle to reflect caring and to improve the lives of individuals, their families, and communities.

The event in the city was organized in collaboration with Mayor Inday Sara Duterte’s Office, the City Health Office and the Office of Councilor April Marie Dayap. CIO
