LIKE the explorer it was named after, the hospitality company galloped to the country and set its peg on Davao soil and built the first Marco Polo hotel in the Philippines.

The hotel was the sought-after “residence” of the locals and tourists, leisure travelers and businessmen. Its ballrooms were filled with glittery soirees, the restaurants served discerning foodies and Eagles Bar was the preferred haunt of the partyphilles.

The Davao hotel marked another milestone by appointing the first lady General Manager of a Marco Polo hotel in the country. The sister hotels in Cebu and Ortigas joined in applauding the appointment of Dottie Wurgler-Cronin.

Under her wings, Marco Polo has amplified its presence in the local hospitality scene.

Most recently, Eagles Bar started shaking the bushes with Safari Nights, a move to wake the night denizens and lure them to an extended weekend of revelry.

Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays are the days to bask in the 24 classic cocktails. I am sure not one bacchanal in the city has tried all of it — Alexander, Bellini, Bloody Mary, Caipirinha, Cosmopolitan, Cuba Libre, Daiquiri, Gin Fizz, Long Island Iced Tea, Mai Tai, Manhattan, Margarita, Martini, Mimosa, Mojito, Old Fashioned, Planter’s Punch, Screw Driver, Side Car, Tom Collins, Whiskey Sour, Piña Colada Cocktail, Singapore Sling, and Kir Royale.

You do not have to prove you are a winner by finishing everything in one go. But if your photo or video-clip taken at the bar during Safari Nights is good enough, you can win an overnight stay for two with breakfast at the Cabana Room. Visit the Marco Polo Davao (MPD) page on Facebook for details on how to join.

Again, the hotel makes a bold move and said no to plastic straws. As part of the hotel’s support on sustainable tourism, the EarthCheck Certified hotel launched its Straw-less Campaign.

Marco Polo is the first hotel in Davao City to wag its fingers to plastic.

“To eliminate the usage of single-use plastic straw, MPD will be providing bamboo straws for smoothies, Signature Iced Coffee and some classic cocktails. MPD bamboo straws, specially made by Bambuhay, are anti-bacterial, biodegradable, reusable bamboo straws and will be available for merchandise in the upcoming months,” said Sarah Mama, MPD Marketing Manager.

Now, welcome a most impressive maneuver of the hotel—the handy Smartphone, the newest and most exciting addition to its room amenities.

“Handy” is a complimentary amenity that offers hassle-free travel with 24/7 connectivity to hotel guest services anytime, anywhere. Guest rooms will be equipped with complimentary handy Smartphone, allowing guests to stay connected throughout their stay.

Guests can login their personal account, type in their stay dates and enjoy unlimited 3G internet access, unlimited local calls and international calls to Australia, China, Japan, Singapore, US and Hong Kong. handy will also have an Attractions Guidebook, Shopping and Restaurants Guide, Interactive Map and GPS Functions and Social media networking and instant messaging.

Handy has a special feature which links guests to the hotel restaurants, facilities. Guests will also receive hotel offers via push notification. In three months, in-room guest dining offers will be available as an added feature.

“Marco Polo Davao positions itself as Mindanao’s trendsetter being in the forefront in innovative ideas and practices prioritizing our guests’ experience in every journey they have in Davao City. This partnership marks a leap forward in establishing global presence and complete connectivity in today’s tourism,” said GM Dottie Wurgler-Cronin.
