THE local security forces have advised Dabawenyos to stay home during the Alveo Ironman 70.3 on Sunday, March 25, to avoid inconvenience as heavy traffic is expected with the temporary closure of several roads that will be used in the event.
Police Senior Inspector Ma. Teresita Gaspan, Davao City Police Office (DCPO) spokesperson, said they will be implementing maximum deployment of their personnel to man the event.
She said no one would be allowed to cross the roads designated for the event so as not to hamper the race.
Considering that this is an international event and some of the participants are celebrities, one of the challenges they are anticipating is the influx of spectators.
Based on the Davao City Transportation and Traffic Management Office (CTTMO) traffic advisories, the stretch from the intersection of J.P Laurel Avenue and R. Castillo Street, Davao City (Alcantara) towards north along Maharlika Highway leading up to Robinson's Mall Tagum will be closed from 3 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., and the southbound lane going toward Davao City from 3 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Sunday.
The northbound lane (going towards Lanang) of J.P. Laurel Avenue from Corner F. Torres Street up to corner of R. Castillo (Alcantara) will be closed from 3 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. But the Carlos P. Garcia Highway or Diversion Road will remain open and vehicles can still use the Buhangin flyover towards the city center but the route from J. P Laurel to Alcantara will be closed for 12 hours.
Meanwhile, Gaspan said they were closely coordinating with the Police Regional Office and Davao del Norte Police Provincial Office in implementing security measures because their jurisdiction covers only up to Lasang.
There will also be augmentation from neighboring police provincial offices to help ensure peace and order during the one-day event.
Deployment of police personnel will start on Friday, March 23.
