Davao City has been selected as the recipient of the 1st Association of Southeast Asian Nation (ASEAN) Clean Tourist City Award for reaching the criteria and requirements set by the ASEAN Clean Tourist City Standard (ACTCS).

The awarding ceremony was held last January 26, 2018 during the Asean Tourism Forum at the Shangri-La Hotel in Chiang Mai, Thailand.

The standards include a solid Environment Management Program, Cleanliness, Waste Management, Awareness-building about Environmental Protection and Cleanliness, Green Spaces, Health Safety, Urban Safety and Security, Tourism Infrastructure and Facilities.

Davao City has policies to keep its remaining environmental frontiers intact and rehabilitate those which have been destroyed.

This has been one of the indicator which is undeniably the important element among all the criteria and policies relating to the improvement and enhancement of living standards of the general public.

The award also comes with a challenge for the city to improve its waste management and the city takes advantage of environmental laws which ensure proper collection and disposal of garbage. The city is known for its well- disciplined residents plus a localized version of Ecological Solid Waste Management Act which is now being implemented.

ACTCS is aimed at promoting and encouraging the cities to announce and stun the people within the boundaries of their competence as well as the visitors to their cities in order to be aware of environmental situation whereby they are living and visiting. Its main purpose is to provide ASEAN member countries with a tool that will improve the quality of tourism in their cities, increase their marketing competitiveness but also improve the situation of local residents and their livelihood by alleviating poverty.

On the onset of the administration Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte, the City Government has declared the five key areas that it will focus on: peace and order, education, effective delivery of social services, investment promotion and generation, and tourism. The administration of Mayor Sara Duterte aims to make Davao City the premier leisure and investment destination of the country while maintaining a stable environment for development and becoming the rallying point for Mindanao. Reaping the rewards of the previous administration, Davao City has gained a robust foundation for peace and security, ultimately paving the way for the city to rebuild a favorable environment for business, commerce and tourism.

Based on the Department of Tourism's 2010 report, Davao Region had total arrivals of 913,182 visitors, and more than half of this figure or 682,821 were Davao City's tourists - making the city the No. 6 tourist destination in the country last year. Among the reasons why tourists visit Davao City are following: being in a typhoon-free zone; having unique eco-tourism and cultural resources, attractions and activities; strategic location with a number of flights, shipping routes and land trips; competitive cost advantage/value for money; most prepared city to respond to emergency; availability of world class public and private utilities, services and infrastructure; highly skilled and educated population; safe and clean destination; and the city government's strong partnership with the private sector.

At present, the city government is currently embarking on a new tourism campaign that captures Davao City's abundance of eco-tourism assets and practices as well as its diverse multi-cultural populace and heritage.
